Overview
In 2017, architect and designer Sona Reddy approached me to brand a new store she was opening in Hyderabad- Room Therapy. A furniture and home decor store, Room Therapy grew to be well known and loved amongst locals and travellers to the city. Seven years later, it was time for an evolution, and Sona got in touch with me to help bring her vision to life.
Room Therapy Collective
Sona, an architect and designer with an eclectic style and a keen eye for design wanted to bring unique design objects and furniture under one roof, in a curated, gallery style experience. Since it was to be a collection of designers and one-of-a-kind pieces under the Room Threrapy Banner, the name ‘Room Therapy Collective’ was what she wanted to work with. Her brief was simple— she wanted an identity that was bold, eye-catching, and neon!
The Logo
With the identity, we wanted to retain the Room Therapy word mark, and add to it, infusing it with the personality of an art gallery. Our solution was a combination of upright and italicised letterforms in a 3x3 grid, where no two letterforms repeated themselves similarly. A ligature with the two Ls added an element of interest, while the two C's and Es came together to set the tone for something unexpected and one of a kind.
Brand Visual Language
The colour palette for Room Therapy Collective inherited the charcoal from the original word mark, combined with a vibrant neon. The strong contrast created a design language that was visually arresting and memorable, exactly what Sona wanted. Each object at Room Therapy Collective was sold with a certificate of authenticity by the maker, reframing a customer as a patron of the arts.
The Room Therapy Collective Website
The Room Therapy Collective website was built primarily as a catalogue for the years collection. True to the spirit of the physical retain space, Sona wanted her website to be a virtual gallery; a space for people to browse art and objects for the pleasure of it. Mindful that purchases of this value are not always conducted online, Sona wanted to present the objects to be browsed, while concealing the price and option to buy under a layer of information. An interested customer would find it with ease, but someone just browsing could enjoy their experience without engaging with more information than was needed.
Our Approach
The experience we wanted to give our users, was a browsable, gallery experience with the products at the centre of it all. With a clean navigation and the focus on products, the user was directed from the home page, into the collection where a grid of large images with white open space welcomed them to experience each product at leisure.
With wireframes and a clear structure in place, we shifted focus to the user interface. Building on the identity, we added bold typography and a colour palette of soft peach tints to balance out the vibrant neon. Our photographs were styled to draw the user in to the physical space and view objects in context.
Note : These are mocks of the website. Some of the images used are for reference only and do not indicate products sold on Room Therapy Collective
The responsiveness of the website was always priority, and so mobile screens were designed in parallel. No detail was too small while building screens, and we ensured that every single component responded beautifully to make for an enjoyable, easy reading experience.
